Les Sirenes at Art of the Plaza- Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (June-September 2024)

Les Sirènes features seven distinct mermaids from Haitian waters, each embodying a cautionary tale from local folklore. Among them is the golden mermaid, who lures the greedy to waterfalls with promises of wealth. The mermaid bride appears on shores, seeking lifelong companions. The conch-carrying mermaid uses her instrument to ensnare sailors. The environmental mermaid targets those who pollute, while the transforming mermaid can turn others into mermaids, a spell only undone by offerings to a vodou practitioner. The people-killing mermaid drags her victims into the abyss, and the divine protector rewards those who care for nature across Haiti’s rivers and coasts.

As Christopher strolled by the museum at night, he couldn't help but imagine that if this were Haiti, whispers of folklore would fill the air—tales of mermaids lurking in the water, with people tossing coins as offerings for protection. The experience shifted from day to night; after dark, the strong wind set the mermaid tails in motion, making them seem almost real.
